This story is a big spiritual journey set against the backdrop of the super-awesome Whispering Desert.

Rhea Strait & Chronus Twister
Kolassa's parents. Rhea, I wanted to be kind of cute and young-motherly... I couldn't possibly have done any better. My original drawing came out so good that I found myself shilling Rhea's good looks a few times in the text. And for Chronus, I wanted a badass bald guy... not very many ponies with no mane and no other distinguishing marks. Kinda interesting.

Elan
Elan, a leader figure of sorts, I designed to be a horse instead of a pony. This drawing is very, very different from my original concept, because the original design predates Season 3's introduction of the Saddle Arabians; from now on I'm using them as a template for horses (the crew have stated that the Arabians are, in fact, ponies... but pfft, like that makes any sense). Elan's coloration and hairstyle are based on a certain famous webcomic character, also named Elan.

Spyder
I had a good deal of fun taking some exotic wildlife from the world and giving it the MLP treatment; I try to give them the characteristics of ponies, rather than the very different style seen in the buffalo, cattle, and such, so Zecora is my biggest inspiration there. In Spyder's case, she's a gemsbok; the only real decision I made here was the shape and color of her eyes, everything else was just a matter of making a gemsbok fit the style of the show's characters.

Spectatus
If you can't trust a floating mess of eyeballs and teeth, who can you trust? And Spectatus is a very trustworthy companion. Admittedly, he really dissatisfied me as a character, first as I came to realize just how incongruous he is in the story's mythology, and then when I just never came up with anything for him to really do. Still a really fun character. I'd never cut him out of future retellings or anything.

Corvid
Corvid was inspired by the mythical roc, and when I think of a roc my first thought is of the one from the DreamWorks film Sinbad, go figure, so that's where I got the coloration. I didn't notice at first that she has the exact same face as Kane, of the Old Gods, but decided to make that even more noticeable to highlight the pre-existing connection between them... of course since I'm the one doing the drawing there's no guarantee that they'll ever actually look alike, but, meh.
